Lifting Ourselves to Lift Others: When Wellness blends with Service
At the Lift Where You Live Foundation, our mission has always been about action. We are a "boots on the ground" organization, known for grabbing shovels, clearing trails, and building homes. But this May, we are turning our focus inward to the most critical engine behind every single project we execute: you.
This month, our core focus is personal health and wellness.
It sounds simple, but it is a fundamental truth: you cannot pour from an empty cup. To lead with presence, build with strength, and show up consistently for our neighborhoods, we must first ensure our own foundation is rock solid. By taking care of ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally, we become exponentially better prepared to serve those around us.
The Three Pillars of a Strong Foundation
To lift a community, you need strength. This May, we are focusing on building that strength across three distinct areas:
Physical Wellness: True service requires energy. Whether it’s getting enough rest, staying hydrated, or moving our bodies, physical health gives us the raw endurance needed to show up for those in need whether it be supporting emotionally, educating, building, or cleaning.
Mental Clarity: Our projects require focus, strategy, and problem-solving. Prioritizing mental wellness means creating space to unplug, reduce stress, and sharpen our minds so we can make sound, impactful decisions when leadership calls.
Emotional Resilience: Empathy is at the heart of what we do. By nurturing our emotional health, we build the patience, compassion, and grit required to connect deeply with our neighbors and push through challenges.
Service as a Symmetric Cycle
Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s strategic preparation. Think of it as a lifecycle of strength: wellness breeds capability, capability drives impactful service, and hands-on service inherently brings a profound sense of purpose and joy back into our lives.
When you prioritize your health, you aren't just doing it for yourself. You are doing it for the family next door that needs a hand building their home. You are doing it for the local food bank that needs high-energy volunteers. You are doing it because a stronger you means a stronger community.
A sunrise run is how I lift myself. It gives me the time I need to process what is going on in my life, breathe fresh air, and gain excitement for the new day ahead of me.
How to "Lift Yourself" This Month
We aren't just talking about wellness this May; we are putting it into practice. Here are a few ways to start right where you stand:
Move with Purpose: Take a walk on a local trail—enjoy the nature we work so hard to protect.
Develop your talents or “Personal Outlets”: What recharges your mental battery? Prioritize taking the time to do the things you love that give you a mental or creative outlet.
Check In: Take five minutes today to assess your own physical and emotional limits.
Let's use this month to rest, recharge, and rebuild our personal foundations. When we take care of the caretaker, there is no limit to what we can achieve together.
